Buchu

Buchu is a small flowering shrub native to South Africa. This bushy shrub has bright, greeny yellow leaves and has a strong aromatic taste and a peppermint like odour. It has small flowers with five white petals and its fruit appear when the leaves shed in autumn.

Constituents: The main constituents of buchu leaves are diosphenol having antiseptic properties. It also contains volatile oil, mucilage and flavonoids.

Medicinal Uses:

• It is an effective remedy for various ailments like kidney and bladder infections.
• It is also used to treat prostate problems and stomach aches.
• It can be used to treat inflammation of gums, colon.
• It can also be used to treat rheumatism and gout.

Cautions:

• Buchu stimulate uterus and should be avoided during pregnancy.
• It should be avoided in cases of irritable bowel syndrome.
• It should be avoided by people suffering from serious kidney disease.
