There is a stark difference in western and the eastern way of life. West focuses more on altering the surrounding while east focuses on changing the self. In west people will try to change the way things are functioning whereas in east people will try to adapt to the changing situations.
Western people are materially successful, there people have all sorts of material comforts but still when it comes to internal peace their asian counterparts are more happy. Why is that? The answer can be found in the way the east and the west thinks.
East says that one cannot be happy by changing the surroundings, happiness can only be attained from within, one cannot chase happiness. Peace is not somewhere in future but it is here in the present, it is here right now. West says that if you are not happy with something then change that 'thing', and East says that you change your outlook.
One of master Gasan's monks visited the university in Tokyo. When he returned, he asked the master if he had ever read the Christian Bible. "No," Gasan replied, "Please read some of it to me." The monk opened the Bible to the Sermon on the Mount in St. Matthew, and began reading. After reading Christ's words about the lilies in the field, he paused. Master Gasan was silent for a long time. We need memory to function effectively in our day to day life, it would be a disaster if we forgot our name or the place where we live :), but what is the role the memory will play in future?
In the starting of the civilization man relied more and more on memorizing things, then he invented writing and printing press so that he could store information without needing to memorize them, then came computers and then the internet, with the arrival of search engines like google we literally have access to information on our fingertips, why do we need to memorize anything we we can find it.
